Clemson-Carolina cup results
Clemson won the
3rd Annual Clemson-Carolina Cup at Cherokee
National this year 12 1/2 to 11 1/2 on Nov.
27.
Carolina had won in golf in 2008 and 2007
and both years lost the football game and
this year after Clemson won the golf, the
Tigers lost the football game ... so maybe
you don't want to win the golf event.
The winning team also gets to fly their flag
during football season on the new flag pole
that will soon be installed above the new
putting green.
Congratulations to the Clemson Tigers of
Cherokee National and congratulations to the
South Carolina Gamecocks football team and
fans. |

PARENT-CHILD
Held June 20
Cherokee National golF & recreation club

Pictured here are (left to right)
Dennis Barnes, Morgan Barnes and Cherokee National
Club Pro Danny Agapion. Dennis and Morgan won the
9-And-Under Parent-Child Tournament.

Cherokee National's Parent-Child
event played on Father's Day weekend was a huge
success with 85 players and 45 teams.
A few parents were busy playing on two teams and
Johnny Leazer played on three teams.
This year's format was an 18-hole modified-modified
Alternate Shot (no handicap). Many teams were a
little skeptical of the format, but once they played
and got in the rhythm, everyone seemed to enjoy the
new format. Both players hit tee shots then each
player hit their partner's ball for the second shot,
then the team elected the ball to continue to
alternate until the ball was holed out for a team
score on each hole.

Parent-Child Tournament Results
On June 14, the annual parent-child
tournament at Cherokee National was played. This
year's format was a modified alternate shot with no
handicap (gross) with the kids playing different
tees depending on their age. The tournament is very
popular among the members and this year was no
different with 40 teams participating. The child's
age determined the age group.

GALLMAN WINS
COUNTY AMATEUR TO CAPTURE
HIS 4TH TOURNAMENT OF YEAR
ROGERS WINS SENIOR
DIVISION
The Cherokee County
Amateur was played on Saturday, May 17, at Gaffney
Country Club and Sunday, May 18, at Cherokee
National Golf Club. Dennis Barnes Jr. took over
duties as chairman after founder of the tournament,
Dr. Bruce Mikota, stepped down last year. Dennis did
an outstanding job raising some additional sponsor
money and organizing the event with Gaffney Country
Club Professional Chris Wood and Cherokee National
Club Professional Danny Agapion.
The tournament attracted 75 players from Cherokee
County, the largest field ever. Both golf courses
were in excellent shape, while at the “Country
Club,” many players struggled with the small
undulating greens and tough pin placements. At
Cherokee National, many players commented on how the
length of the course and quick greens challenged
them.
In the Senior Division (55 & over) Kenny Rogers shot
an impressive 74 on Sunday to hold off short game
wizard Bobby Ellis by two shots in the Sr.
Championship “A” Flight. Dr. Bill Wheeler also
played very well on Sunday to win the Senior
Championship “B” Flight by 5 shots over Dennis
Barnes, Sr.
In the Championship “B” Flight, Limestone Golfer
from Chesnee, Kyle Scruggs, held off Cherokee
National Club Champion Dalon Queen and Jason
Blanton.
In the Championship “A” Flight, USC Upstate Spartans
#1 man from Gaffney got off to a hot start on
Sunday, starting his round eagle, birdie, birdie to
build a 4-shot lead over his former teammate at
Gaffney High who is this year’s SC High School State
Runner-Up, Matthew Hopper.
However, at the turn, Matthew pulled to within 3
shots, but Josh played the tough back nine at
Cherokee National 2 under to win by 6 to receive the
Milan Gettys Crystal trophy.
Josh had an excellent fall season at USC Upstate,
winning two tournaments, then two more this past
spring season and recently he and one of his
teammates won the CGA Four Ball at Camden CC. Josh
is playing some excellent golf and will be tough to
beat in many years to come in the Cherokee County
Amateur.

4TH ANNUAL
HENRY TRANSOU MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
(Held Saturday, April 26, 2008)
The 4th Annual Henry Transou Memorial
Golf Tournament was a huge success. The last
Saturday in April every year we celebrate the life
of Henry Transou, PGA Professional.
Henry was the PGA professional for nearly 40 years
at Cherokee National Golf & Recreation Club. He was
an excellent golf professional who was very well
liked by his membership at Cherokee National and
fellow PGA professionals.
The tournament has been well supported by the
membership and local sponsors since the beginning
and has raised nearly $40,000. The proceeds will
always go towards club projects. We have already
built a new custom scoreboard, purchased a junior
trophy listing all past champions since 1963 and
designed a special bronze plaque of Henry that hangs
proudly on the clubhouse.
The next project will be the construction of a
5,000-square-foot green that our membership will
enjoy for their short game practice. The green will
be located adjacent to the current practice green.
Thank you members and sponsors.
