RE:  Driving Range at Cherokee National

The board of Directors is pleased to announce some exciting news about our club,

improve our practice facilities. After several months of study, input from members and discussions with other clubs, the Greens Committee recommended to the Board that the hitting surface be enlarged. In order to provide the adequate space for practice for a club our size of 600 members, it was decided to more than double the size of our current teeing area. This will give the Bermuda grass in the areas not being used for practice time to heal, regenerate and be properly maintained.

The total project will take approximately 90 days.  We will move dirt from the range fairway forward to build extend the lower range tee box.  We will also shape some target greens.   Part of the construction process will include clearing nearly 2 acres of trees down the right side and at the back right side of the range. Once construction is done we will sod the new extend tee with Bermuda 419 and seed the fairway with common and rye to help us get the range fairway in shape as soon as possible so we can pick up the balls with our range picker.

The total budget of the range renovation project is $25,000 and members will not be assessed.   Over the last four years the driving range income has averaged over $18,000 annually.

Members who have paid for the range plan which expires at the end of March 2010 will be credited $15 per month for those months the range was closed + one extra month.  If members have more than one on the range plan we will credit their account accordingly.  This credit may be applied towards next years range plan or next years dues.  We will make every effort to continue to keep our range fees and monthly dues very affordable.

The driving range renovation is a capital improvement that is funded from club funds and is not funded by the Henry Transou tournament.  We have over $43,000 in the Henry Transou Tournament Account and that committee has plans to build an additional short game green possibly as soon as this coming fall.

We apologize for the inconvenience of closing the driving range down for the rest of the summer and appreciate your continued support.

Thank you!
Board of Directors

WHAT ARE THE ODDS?
Three golfers ace No. 17 on same day

Don Brown, Mike Dixon, Dick Miles

Some of "The Quarter Boys," a group of golfers who regularly play with and against each other at Cherokee National Golf & Recreation Club, left the course Wednesday, March 18, with a significant — if not unequaled — accomplishment.
Three members of that prestigious group recorded holes-in-one on the same hole.
The par-3 17th, playing Wednesday from a distance of about 150 yards with a right pin location, was the scene of the trifecta.
A total of 19 "Quarter Boys" showed up for Wednesday's round of better-ball play. The group usually is made up of senior members but all members and their guests are invited to play. The stakes are not high — thus the group's name — but the competition is intense.
The triple aces began with Mike Dixon, 65, who used a Hogan 6-iron to record his second career hole-in-one.
oments later, Don Brown, 72, holed out with a Ping I5 7- iron. It was his third career ace.
The third hole-in-one of the day on No. 17 came off a Cleveland 4-iron struck by Dick Miles, 70, the second ace of his career.
